CONTEXT: Living Spaces is a retail company with stores across the United States. With the added expansion of stores, the previous arrangement of having instructor led training for every topic at every new store was no longer viable. To combat this, the training team began to produce eLearning content to onboard retail sales team members as well as to provide resources for existing team members. In addition, we found that across different stores in different cities/states, there were many inconsistencies in training as each store had their own “tribal knowledge” but no streamlined process.

NEEDS IDENTIFIED:

  • Reducing the burden of trainers and instructors as the company expanded more

  • Streamline training across all stores in the US to avoid each store having their own process that was separate from others

  • Provide resources to existing retail sales employees to engage with

NARRATIVE BASED TRAINING

While working at this company, my director believed in creating training that was story driven in order to drive engagement. In this course, I created a character who guided you through best practices in sales rather than simply having text or even having an impersonal video just giving you information. To make a connection, I wanted to have a character talk to you as if you are having a conversation on the training material.


ANIMATED VIDEOS

To create the character for the training, I used Vyond to design a custom character with our company’s logo. In addition, I provided the voiceover. The remainder of the course had various videos showing our sales trainer, Todd, explaining different scenarios to a new hire.
